Syrians support legislative change for women’s rights

In 2004, al-Mobadara Social Association, one of Karama’s partners in Syria, surveyed nearly 3,000 women and men across the country to gauge public opinion on changes to key discriminatory legislation, including laws on marriage and divorce, custody of children, inheritance, polygamy and equality in testimony. The survey found strong support for abolishing arbitrary divorce, amending the polygamy law and ensuring that mothers with custody of children can raise them in the marital home, and not be evicted on widowhood or divorce. Now with Karama’s support this important survey is being printed, translated into English, and disseminated widely, helping to expand its audience and its impact
